Self-Portrait Photography Workshop

The essence of self-portrait photography is performative – a form of art that captures moments during a performance by the photographer themselves

What is it about?

Whether you’re currently working on a specific project, wish to start a new one, or simply want to experiment and learn about this nuanced photographic genre, this workshop aims to help hone an artistic vision in the art of self-portraiture. Through self-portraiture, we can find all the versions and nuances of ourselves by exploring all the people we could be, self-affirming our own identity, or expressing the plurality of our identity and personality.

The workshop is a mixture in-depth discussions on pioneering self-portrait artists (particularly from the feminist art movement) and practical exercises that you can employ in your own projects. As a group, you will share your results with to gain critical feedback on your work.

What can you expect?

  • In-depth discussions on contemporary self-portraiture as an art form

  • Discuss reference works from influential artists in the genre, such as Claude Cahun, Francesca Woodman, Jo Spence, Robert Mapplethorpe, David Uzochikwu, Cindy Sherman, and others

  • Reflecting on the importance of the body, space and time in self-portraiture

  • Exploring the photographer’s tools: Lighting, Setting, Storytelling, Poses & Gestures

  • Additional layers: Audio, Text, Materials, Performance, Moving Images

  • Reflecting on the purpose of self-portraiture: Expressive vs Reflective (or both)

  • Themes: Personal, Societal, Political, Fun

Is it for you?

The workshop is held in English (supported in German, if needed) and is open to anyone over the age of 18 with an interest in photographic self-portraiture. You do not need to be a professional photographer or artist. I welcome all from different backgrounds, level of experience and artistic disciplines.

However, you must have your own equipment, such as a digital/analogue/mobile-phone camera, as well as the basic knowledge necessary to use it. Technical usage of equipment will not be covered in detail.

No matter how you identify, you are welcome to apply. The workshop is an LGBTQ+ safe space!

What is the schedule?

A new, more condensed and intensive format is offered over 4 sessions:

DAY 1: Introductions
Saturday, 3 February, 10:00 - 14:00

I will introduce my practice and introduce the notion of self-portraiture as a performance for the camera. I will also begin to introduce reference works from artists who have inspired my own self-portraiture practice. Participants will then present self-portrait work they have done in the past and/or an idea for a small project which they wish to begin. I'd ask that you also reflect on your work process so that we may understand the motivation behind the work. Was the purpose reflective or expressive? How did you feel during the process?

It is perfectly fine if you do not have previous work to present. However, it may be beneficial for both yourself and the group discussion, if you attempt to take a few self-portraits before the start of the program. This way, we have a starting and discussion point.

A small practical assignment to be presented in the next session.

DAY 2: Discussion + Practice
Sunday, 4 February, 10:00 - 14:00

Short discussion of the homework assignment with group feedback.

I will then present a number of reference works from artists who have inspired my practice. The focus will be on examining their use of body, space and time. Moving into a more practical phase, we will discuss the use and importance of light, setting, storytelling and poses in the studio. Bring your camera!

Either a larger individual assignment or free time to work on your own project.

DAY 3: Discussion + Group Feedback
Saturday, 10 February, 10:00 - 14:00

We will wrap up the theoretical discussions on self-portraiture.

You will then present the results of your assignment or your progress in your own project. Group feedback and discussion. Afterwards, we will further expand the impact of self-portraiture through layering of text, audio, and other materials.

DAY 4: Final Group Feedback
Saturday, 17 February, 10:00 - 12:00

Final group feedback and wrapping up of the workshop.

Who am I?

Originally from the U.S., I live and work as an independent artist, photographer and lecturer in Vienna, Austria. My artistic practice centers around an exploration of identity—particularly gender and sexuality—through photography, moving images, audio, and installation work. Drawing from my experience as a queer person, my work is motivated by an existential need to understand and express myself and to connect with others from a queer-feminist position. My intention is to create work that facilitates intimacy and encourages empathy, understanding, and critical conversations about queer identity and expression in a post-heteronormative society.

Although I’m mostly self-taught in digital and analog techniques, I also studied at the Schule Friedl Kubelka für künstlerische Photographie, International Summer Academy of Fine Art Salzburg, and hold a MSc degree in Socio-Ecological Economics. I have exhibited in various galleries and off spaces, including MuseumsQuartier, Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin, Foto Galerie Wien, Ostlicht Galerie, and Galerie 5020 Salzburg, as well as art festivals, such as Foto Wien, Rotlicht Festival, Off Grid Festival, European Month of Photography Berlin and Vienna Art Week. I have over 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring various academic subjects, including English, Math, and Financial Management, as well as photography workshops during Off Grid Foto Festival and Foto Wien Festival.

You can see examples of my self-portrait and other works in the gallery below, on this website, and on Instagram.
